islands
Energyia Holistic Holiday retreats provide a unique holiday retreat, with time and inspiration to pause and reflect,
pamper, strengthen and revitalize your body, mind and spirit - all while lapping up the
mystical moods of the Ionion sea, the charming countryside of Zakynthos,
the wonderful spirit of the local people, and a wealth of activities
designed to enhance well-being, revitalize your energy.
Pilates, as a method of physical
movement, recently taking the world by storm, performed to
stretch, strengthen and balance the body, is
based on the work of Joseph Pilates -
a man ahead of his
time, a pioneer, a thinker, an exercise practitioner and author.
Influenced mainly by the early Greeks, he emphasised their
coordination and balance of body and mind. Joseph Pilates dealt with the
whole being, - what we eat, our work and whether we get enough
exercise when at work, the importance of sleep and relaxation, and many
other factors within a healthy lifestyle.
Joseph Pilates Ideal man - The Ancient Greeks!

Joseph Pilates intention was to
deal with the 'whole being'.His ideal
was the ancient Greek man - well tuned in
body, mind and spirit.
What we eat, our work, whether we get enough exercise
when at work, the importance of
sleep, relaxation, and many other factors come into play within a healthy lifestyle.
He designed exercises
to integrate the three concepts of
mind, body and spirit, emphasizing a
sense of wholeness, associated with eastern meditation and
movement. The foundation of his exercises came from his study of
yoga, Zen meditation and ancient Greek and Roman fitness regimes.
HOLISTIC FITNESS OF MIND BODY AND SPIRIT
Joseph
Pilates designed exercises to integrate the three
concepts of mind, body and spirit, emphasizing a sense of wholeness,
commonly associated with eastern meditation and movement.
The roots of his exercises came from his study of
yoga, Zen meditation and ancient Greek and Roman fitness regimes.
Joseph Pilates clearly advocated that one of the major results of Contrology,
his exercise system,
was in gaining the mastery of
your mind over the complete control of your
body. A healthy mind in a healthy body, the ancient Greeks believed, was
linked to the development and balance of mind, spirit, and body.
While filming on the island of Zakynthos, the charm and
friendliness of the people, the depth of their spirituality, and the
quality of their mental outlook and hospitality, have been of tremendous
inspiration.
The quality of family life, so important to the people of Zakynthos, along with fabulous Mediterranean food
and lifestyle patterns - have inspired me to write and
produce Zante Energyia programmes.
I believe the community of Zakynthos
proffers great examples, on many fronts, to benefit the wider world. I
sincerely hope that the negative elements of mass tourism, including
mindlessness and abuse involving alcohol does not reach too deep into the
roots of this special society .

Retreats with Michele Wilburn
Born
in 1880 Joseph Pilates first presented the exercise system that today we
call, Pilates, around 1914.
A German National living in England at the outbreak of WWI,
he was placed under forced internment in England, where he shared with his
fellow camp members exercises he had taught himself over the previous 20
years.
The original exercise system presented by
Joseph Pilates was
known as 'Contrology'.
The 6 basic principles of Joseph Pilates, for performing exercise on
a physical level
- Concentration
- Breathing
- Control
- Centring
- Flowing movement
- Precision
In
1934 Pilates described his exercise system of Contrology.
"It is the conscious control of all muscular movements of
the body. It is the correct utilization and application of the leverage
principles afforded by the bones comprising the skeletal framework of the
body, a complete knowledge of the mechanism of the body, and a full
understanding of the principles of equilibrium and gravity as applied to
the movements of the body in motion, at rest and in sleep."
Ten years later he wrote:
"Contrology is complete coordination of
body, mind, and
spirit. Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control
of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you
gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination
associated with all your subconscious activities."
